Over the last year, social deal sites have been popping up all over the place. I hadn’t given much attention to them until this week when I saw an amazing deal from Living Social. They were selling $20 Amazon gift cards for $10. All I did was click “buy” and entered some basic info to purchase it. The best part was that the deal I just purchased could actually be free if I referred three people – so I emailed the link to my wife, and a few friends and VOILA – $20 Amazon gift card for free!
What is Living Social?
Living Social is a ‘deal a day’ site that promotes special deals for different cities across the US. Once you sign up, you are emailed a discounted deal each day that you can use at local businesses. If you like the deal, just click ‘buy’ and your deal is sent the next day.

I like living social because if you refer three people to the deal, your deal is free. Free is nice and the referral is good because you can save friends money. They’ll think you’re really smart and give you more respect (I may have exaggerated in that last sentence).

Groupon is another deal site that also provides coupons for local businesses. Their discounts are also huge and can be anywhere from 25% to 90% off.
An interesting note about Groupon is that you can customize the deals that they send to you. You can add your zip code, gender, and age and they’ll make sure you see relevant deals. Pretty cool.

Groupon also gives a $10 reward for referring friends, so you give your friends the gift of saving while you have no limits on the referral bonus.
