What’s Your Proudest Frugal Moment?

What’s Your Proudest Frugal Moment? April 29, 2011

Do you have something in your home that you remember as that ‘one great deal!’ Or maybe there was a time where you were being really frugal and bought something used and have kept it for a really long time?

My proudest frugal moment was three years ago when I purchased our current washer and dryer. My wife and were about to get married and I realized that we needed a washer and dryer. After looking through appliance stores, I realized pretty quickly that we didn’t have the money for the top of the line units, but I really didn’t want to get the cheapest and have to replace them in a few years.

That’s when I went to Craigslist. After a few days of browsing, I saw THE ONE…a Maytag washer and dryer set that looked just like the one my parents had. Hold the phone…you might say. How old is the washer and dryer? A chipper 25 years young. That’s right; it was the exact model washer and dryer that I grew up with.

Here’s the kicker – my parents purchased the same heavy duty, top of the line Maytag units in 1986, washed 2-4 loads of clothes every other day and they’ve lasted over twenty years. I knew these sets were quality, and they were being sold by an older lady for a cool $150. So I swept up the barely used units, plugged them in and have been using them with no problems for the last three years. In fact, I plan on using them for as long as I can!

Every time I look in the laundry room, I just smile because of the great deal we got on the washer and dryer. That was one of the best $150 I’ve spent!

What about you? Have you ever purchased something that you’d consider to be a GREAT deal?
