Whose life are we “pro”? 2013-05-09T06:19:45-06:00

Columbia University historian (and FD blogger) Randall Balmer recently canvassed eight conservative Christian groups for their official positions on torture.  Two responded.  He asks: whose life are we "pro"?

With the Senate having passed its compromise bill on detainees, torture, and the Geneva Convention (not to mention a $448 billion budget for the Department of Defense), an op-ed by Columbia historian (and FD blogger) Randall Balmer offers a timely reminder of the intellectual vacuousness of the way in which many Christian organizations approach the protection of human rights.

An excerpt:

"Several months ago, I canvassed eight prominent religious right
organizations, including the Moral Majority Coalition, Falwell's group, for
their views on torture. My query was straightforward: Please send me, I asked, a
copy of your organization's position on the use of torture. These are groups
that have detailed position papers on everything, including stem-cell research
and same-sex unions, yet only two answered my query. Both of them defended the
Bush administration's policies on torture. No organization associated with the
religious right has yet, to my knowledge, summoned the will to issue a statement
of unequivocal opposition to the use of torture."
