he fact is that our current President is just plain goofy. Nothing anyone
says or does will ever change that. For the rest of my life, at least, his
goofy antics will make news, and tolerance will dictate a kind but
mystified reaction.
I didn't see the 60 Minutes piece on David Kuo, but E.J. Dionne did a great
job this morning in the Washington Post. I have a feeling, however,
that this is not going to rise much above the radar. It actually makes the R's
look more political savvy than they look if you link them ideologically together
with Evangelicals.

What is being missed in the commentary is that these Evangelical leaders
ARE "goofy." Decades of tolerance toward them has led them to consider
their foolishness as wisdom – no negative feedback. Kuo blames the R Party, but
the blame lies on the church – McChurch.

I suspect we are beginning to see the stirrings of a divorce here. The
bottom line is that Evangelicals have pulled the GOP down by their goofiness,
playing into the GOP's desire for their constituency. Goofiness and
expediency combine to pollute both.

Do the Democrats want to go after these people, thereby falling into
the same trap? The best way to approach the matter may be to divide
the goofballs from the thoughtful, something that the Church seems unable or
unwilling to do in its pursuit of numbers. If the Democratic Party can
acknowledge the Gospel from the perspective of its inherent wisdom, they
will simply enlarge their tent to make room for the faithful, leaving the goofy
with nowhere to go but back to the Christian ghetto they call church.

It has been my experience that "the goofy will always be with us."

And I say that, having supported him in his first election…How
goofy!
