The Latest: August 2007 Archive 2013-05-09T06:09:22-06:00

8/31, 11:42a CT: Very true: green evangelicals doesn’t mean liberal evangelicals.

8/30 , 1:51p CT: Should Romney’s Mormon faith matter?  Huckabee says yes.

8/30, 1:20p CT: Barack Obama tries to toughen sanctions on Iran, but the White House won’t let him, because that would hurt American energy companies.  Seriously.

8/29, 10:53a CT: The number of people without health insurance rises; the number in poverty drops.

8/29, 10:42a CT: Is Barack Obama the choice of religious scholars?

8/28, 6:26p CT: See Stan Moody below on the not gay and not promiscuous senator with the wide stance and a foot spasm.  Problem with hyperlinks today…

8/27, 2:24p CT: Stan Moody wonders where the heart of Christianity has gone.

8/27, 12:06p CT: Joe Biden’s Catholic faith has taught him the cardinal sin is abuse of power.

8/27, 11:40a CT: Remember the source of the problem: Bush declares Gonzo a man of “integrity, decency, and principle.”

8/27, 10:16a CT: Gonzo’s final lie: denying reports of his resignation after he had decided to resign.  Check the end of the article.  Truth means nothing to these people.

8/26, 11:05p CT: Here at FD, Patrick Hornbeck suggests there are gays in the graveyard.

8/25, 1:35a CT: Lying comes naturally to Mitt Romney, but he should probably stick to stories that aren’t demonstrably false.

8/24, 2:22p CT: Randy Brinson is broadening the Alabama Christian Coalition’s agenda to include the environment and other issues.

8/24, 2:13p CT: Will Americans tire of the GOP’s incessant subject-switch to gays?

8/23, 6:02p CT: Eric Sapp spots a Mother Jones article that “outs” Hillary as an authentic Christian — as if it’s a scary, scary thing.

8/23, 1:54p CT: Mitt Romney can’t stop flip-flopping on abortion.  Anyone who thinks he has an actual, principled stand on the issue is delusional.

8/22, 2:04p CT: Bush seeks to prevent states from giving health care coverage to working-class kids.  I guess Matthew 25 doesn’t apply to our president.

8/22, 1:34p CT: Here at FD, Linda Seger has the second installment of her series on the differences between conservative and progressive Christians.

8/21, 1:57p CT: More Friedman Units for the victims of genocide in Sudan

8/21, 1:46p CT: Interesting.  Pat Robertson says the Iraq war was a mistake.  Of course, he trumps up his own clairvoyance, claiming he knew from the beginning how bad things would be.

8/20, 9:34a CT: A new generation of evangelical leaders continues to assert itself: Bill Hybels interviews Jimmy Carter.

8/20, 9:19a CT: Bush uses ignorance as a defense on torture: he’s shielding himself from the evidence, so it must not exist.

8/20, 9:10a CT: More babble about Huckabee being concerned with the poor.  Where’s the big health care plan, Mike?  Where’s the anti-poverty plan? Or is it all just rhetoric?

8/20, 9:03a CT: More talk from Republican candidates (especially Huckabee) about moral issues like poverty and so on.  Sounds nice, but didn’t we learn our lesson from Bush’s “compassionate conservative” rouse?

8/20, 8:57a CT: Back from vacation!  Stories coming soon.

8/15, 12:44a CT: Back online for a bit; got a couple good posts from Stan Moody — one on political leadership and one on, yup, gays in the graveyard.

8/9, 9:26a CT: Jesse’s going camping in northern Wisconsin for a little over a week, so the site will be relatively inactive during that time.  Have a great week!

8/8, 1:06p CT: Do conservative and progressive Christians really think differently?  Linda Seger says yes

8/8. 12:06p CT: The Washington Times covers the Yearly Kos interfaith service, and Pastor Dan isn’t impressed.

8/8, 11:59a CT: Two opposite assessments on developments regarding the Sudan genocide — one hopeful, one skeptical

8/7, 2:57p CT: Romney inadvertently admits to lying on abortion to get elected in Massachusetts.

8/7, 2:49p CT: Adam Taylor of Sojourners gets it right on evangelical hawks: “Even if we may disagree on how Christian values should be applied to public-policy issues, we think we could agree on the importance of maintaining your prophetic integrity. And having an uncritical view of the war really compromised that prophetic integrity.”

8/6, 4:41p CT: Jesse Lava says faith matters in politics because it informs our positions on issues — not because it helps politicians show off their religiosity.

8/6, 11:49a CT: Here at FD, Lisa Sharon Harper laments the warrantless wiretapping bill that Republicans in Congress (with help from a few Dems) just passed.

8/6, 7:42a CT: The freedom-lovers have done it again — aided and abetted by a few Democrats who think the Constitution is immaterial when pitted against Bush administration posturing on terrorism.

8/6, 7:36a CT: Segregation at military dining facilities and bathrooms in Iraq? Eh, who needs racial reconciliation?

8/3, 6:37p CT: In a recent speech to pastors, Mike Huckabee hinted at a third-party run if Giuliani becomes the Republican nominee.  The speech also had this choice nugget, among others: “It is not our job to be the king’s friend.  It is our job to be the king’s greatest fear. We are to speak the truth to power.”

8/3, 8:17a CT: Chuck Currie gets it exactly right when discussing Bishop Gene Robinson’s endorsement of Barack Obama, and the Interfaith Alliance’s Welton Gaddy gets it wrong.

8/2, 6:53p CT: Oh. My. God.  Fox’s Roger Ailes, regarding the need for the upcoming Fox Business Channel: “Many times I’ve seen things on CNBC where they are not as friendly to corporations and profits as they should be.”

8/2, 3:19p CT: Nearly seven years after ridiculing and dismissing the Clinton administration policy of diplomacy with North Korea, the Bush administration has finally gone back to that policy — and it seems to be working.

8/2, 3:11p CT: An anonymous senator is holding up a bill to make it easier to divest from Sudan’s genocidal regime.  Wonder what party this mystery senator belongs to…

8/2, 3:04p CT:  Bush still planning on vetoing the children’s health bill the Democrats just passed.  It’s apparently unacceptable that we’d pay for the plan by raising taxes on tobacco.

8/2, 9:37a CT: Our co-chair Rev. Romal Tune gave a dynamic speech to the College Democrats of America last week; part one is here and part two is here.

8/1, 10:21a CT: The Democratic Congress is getting things done.
