Putting Politics Aside

Putting Politics Aside 2013-05-09T06:07:14-06:00

In the movie Waking the Dead, Fielding, a young man pursing his political ambition is haunted by the memory of his love Sarah, who was killed working as an activist with the church.  At the heart of Fielding and Sarah’s relationship was both a shared belief in doing right, as well as a stark difference in attitude toward the American government.  Fielding believes that he can make the world a better place through being a Marine and eventually serving in Congress.  Sarah believes that change can be made by standing up to the powers that be.

As a twenty-three-year-old student, I find it easy to be swept up in the excitement of Obama-Biden campaign.  Yet given the economic crisis and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I can understand why many Americans are disillusioned with Washington politics.  Despite the temptation to leave politics aside, it is more important than ever for us to be critically engaged in politics, particularly as Christians.

During the last economic recession after 9/11, the government played a critical role in ensuring that families had health insurance and a helping hand.  It will be more important than ever that our government takes active steps to strengthen the economy in the longer, but also ensure a safety net for families who are struggling today.

On November 4th, we need to go to the polls and vote our fundamental values.  The Democratic Party stands for our fundamental Christian value of love and care for our neighbors, particularly those in need.  American families need this support now.
