Flood the Senate with calls today. CALL
your Senators and someone else's. Tell
them, "As a person of faith, I am against a compromise on detention and torture."
Have you ever felt like a powerless cog in a wheel at the
mercy of forces that live far above your head?
Well, I hope today isn't one of those days. There's no time for that right now.
Today Amnesty
International and the National Religious
Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT) are calling us all to believe in the power
of our collective action to do justice.
If the Bush Administration and the dissident Republicans have their way this
Friday, their quest for security at all costs could cause America to die
a long, slow, and painful death from the inside out.
Amnesty International warns:
"We are literally days away from action in Congress on a proposal to:
- "Abandon the rule of law and
give the President the freedom to interpret the Geneva Conventions any way
he sees fit. - Provide immunity to those
responsible for past human rights abuses - Exempt from prosecution those
who authorize treatment traditionally considered torture. - Strip detainees of access to
US courts."
Since emailing will have only measured effect with only one
day till the vote, Amnesty and the National Religious Campaign Against Torture
are asking every American to flood
the Senate with calls today.
"Please make as many calls as you can," an emailed mass
appeal from NRCAT read. "It does not
matter if you are from the Senator's state or not."
So CALL
your Senators and someone else's. Tell
them, "As a person of faith, I am against a compromise on detention and torture."
We can make a difference if we act right now.
If friends try to reach me today, they're just gonna have to
wait. ‘Cause I'll be on the phone with
Clinton and Schumer and Santorum and Brownback and Lieberman and McCain and … and
… and …
