Hillary Sinks to a New Low

Hillary Sinks to a New Low 2013-05-09T06:09:05-06:00

A Hillary surrogate has brought the Democratic campaign to a new low.

If you haven’t read the remarks yet, you should.  They’re personal.  They’re repulsive.  And Hillary proceeded to give a speech that didn’t repudiate them.  Here’s the summary:

Buffenbarger [the Clinton surrogate] called Obama a “thespian,” and he sarcastically referred to the junior senator from Illinois as a “wunderkind.” He compared Obama to “Janus, the two-faced Roman god of ancient times.” And he pleaded with the crowd to boo Obama’s labor record.

Early in his speech, Buffenbarger asked, “So now we have a decision to make. Will we rely on the Harvard Law Review editor? The silver-tongued orator from Kansas, Hawaii and Illinois? The man in love with the microphone?”

Taking off the gloves, he said, “Barack Obama is no Muhammad Ali. He took a walk every time there was a tough vote in the Illinois State Senate. He took a walk more than a 130 times. That’s what a shadow boxer does. All the right moves. All the right combinations. All the right footwork. But he never steps into the ring.”

But it was Obama supporters for whom Buffenbarger saved his most vitriolic contempt, and he proved that the Democratic Party’s coalition is nothing if not fragile. Channeling Howard Beale from the movie “Network,” he yelled into the microphone, “Give me a break! I’ve got news for all the latte-drinking, Prius- driving, Birkenstock-wearing, trust fund babies crowding in to hear him speak! This guy won’t last a round against the Republican attack machine. He’s a poet, not a fighter.”

With all this trash talk, who needs a Thrilla in Manilla?

Before this moment, I hadn’t expressed a preference on this site for any Democratic presidential candidate.  I didn’t think that was the place of Faithful Democrats.  But this is just too much.

Indeed, this teeth-grinding drivel may even include a hint of racism and religious bigotry.  The Hillary surrogate somewhat randomly compared Obama (negatively, of course) to Muhammed Ali.  Is it just a coincidence that his comparison of choice was a black Muslim?  Ordinarily I’d assume not; I’m not big on crying bigotry every time someone says something that could possibly be construed as offensive.  But in this context — a venomous screed that was almost surely vetted by the Clinton campaign — I can’t help but suspect that these folks knew exactly what they were doing, while leaving things vague enough for plausible deniability.

Please spread the word about Hillary campaign’s new low.  Hillary should apologize immediately — and if she doesn’t, we can’t let the reckless ambition of a self-entitled politician ruin our party’s chances in November.
