Not the man, of course; he died ten years ago. But the Pacific Cinematheque and the Vancouver Int’l Film Centre will be hosting a series of his shorts, features and documentaries between September 1 and 27.
The program will include nearly every film Kieslowski ever directed. The classic mini-series Dekalog (1988-1989) will screen at the VIFC September 8-13, and of the 39 other items listed at his IMDB filmography, all but four are listed in the Cinematheque’s program. It may be that the four hold-outs — The Photograph (1968), I Don’t Know (1977), Seven Days a Week (1988) and his segment of City Life (1990) — will be screened at the VIFC, but that theatre has not yet released its program for next month.
In addition to the films Kieslowski directed, the Cinematheque will also show two of the three films that have been produced by other directors from scripts of Kieslowski’s since his death, namely Jerzy Stuhr’s The Big Animal (2000) and Tom Tykwer’s Heaven (2002; my review). Danis Tanovic’s Hell (2005) played the festival circuit last year and may be too new for second-run events like this.
Given that I’ve got a couple of infants at home, and there will be lots of daytime press screenings for the local film festival that month, I don’t know how many of these films I will be able to see — but if you want to catch one of these flicks, drop me a line!
AUG 20 UPDATE: I just got the VIFC schedule for the next two months, and nope, those four hold-outs are not on the list.
