Mel Gibson acting again … in a Malick movie?

One year ago, I mentioned that Terrence Malick was reportedly developing a film to be shot in India with Colin Farrell, called Tree of Life. No other details were available, and the notoriously reclusive Malick did not attend last year’s press junket for The New World (2005), so we couldn’t ask him about this directly.

Today, Jeffrey Overstreet stumbled across some bizarre rumours about this film — including the claim that Mel Gibson, who hasn’t starred in a movie since Signs (2002; my review), may have a key role in this film. The rumours just get weirder from there.

(When I say “starred in”, I am excluding Gibson’s supporting role in 2003’s The Singing Detective, his cameo in 2004’s Paparazzi, the appearance of his hand in 2004’s The Passion of the Christ, and his guest role on the TV show Complete Savages — all of which, FWIW, were produced by his company, Icon Entertainment.)
