Newsbites: Compass! Blood! Potter!

Newsbites: Compass! Blood! Potter! August 2, 2006

Just a couple quick casting-news bits.

1. IGN.com reports that Eva Green, recently seen in Kingdom of Heaven and soon to be seen in Casino Royale, has been cast as the witch queen Serafina Pekkala in The Golden Compass.

2. What is it with Paul Dano and religious content? Earlier this year he played the son of a fundamentalist preacher, who among other things advocates teaching Intelligent Design in public schools, in The King (my review); and right now, he can be seen in theatres in Little Miss Sunshine, as a Nietzsche buff whose T-shirt says “Jesus Was Wrong”. Now, the Hollywood Reporter says he has also been cast in Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood, as “a gifted, charismatic young preacher who captivates churchgoers.”

UPDATE: I just got a press release with the following news:

3. Helena Bonham Carter has joined the cast of the new Harry Potter movie as Bellatrix Lestrange, a Death Eater and a cousin of Sirius Black’s. FWIW, I interviewed Bonham Carter ten years ago for the student paper The Ubyssey; see page 3 of this PDF file.
