The nominees for the next Razzie awards won’t be announced until January 14, i.e. one day before the Oscar nominations come out, but the Gold Derby website got its hands on one of the ballots — and, perhaps surprisingly, Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, which has a “fresh” rating of 77% at Rotten Tomatoes, has been shortlisted in four categories while Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings, which has a “rotten” rating of 28%, has been shortlisted in only one.
Both films are on the shortlist for “worst remake, rip-off or sequel”, while Noah is also a contender for worst director (Aronofsky), worst screenplay (written by Aronofsky and Ari Handel) and “worst screen combo” (the “rock monsters”).
Each category has about a dozen candidates, and voters can nominate candidates who aren’t on the shortlist, so there’s no guarantee that either film will be among the five final nominees in any given category. Still, it’s a curious sign of how divisive Noah was, and how forgettable Exodus: Gods and Kings seems to have been.
P.S.: Left Behind is also on the shortlist in four categories, for worst picture, worst director (Vic Armstrong), worst actor (Nicolas Cage) and worst screenplay.
Former Left Behind star Kirk Cameron is also on the shortlist for worst actor for Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas, and his film is on five other shortlists as well: worst picture, worst director (Darren Doane), worst supporting actress (Brigitte Cameron), worst screenplay and worst screen combo (“Kirk Cameron and his ego”).
January 13 update: Neither Noah nor Exodus were nominated for anything in the end, but Left Behind and Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas certainly were.
