The SBL Study Bible

The SBL Study Bible 2024-02-28T17:51:47-04:00

The SBL Study Bible features the NRSV. The Bible contains thousands of notes authored by scholars.

I spent time with this Bible to access it’s value.

The pros are that the NRSV is an interesting translation. One that has many positive moments. It contains the Apocryphal books, which are good to have as they provide interesting historical data.

The notes are easy to read, and some of the content boxes are helpful. In fact, I cited some of them in my upcoming book on New Testament reconstruction.

The cons are that the pages are very thin. And the scholarship seems to weigh heavy on NT scholars that date the New Testament epistles much later than many conservative evangelical scholars do. The notes, while plentiful, are very short, leaving out much information than say some other study Bibles include.

All in all, it’s a good study Bible to have on hand.
