Are You “Frozen” With Fear of Being Gay?

I just saw Frozen, based solely on Justin Lee’s recommendation. I. Absolutely. Loved it! I agree with Justin that the story beautifully mirrors the struggle of those who are LGBTQ – something they never asked for and cannot change. Being “different” this way also scares them, because they don’t know what is ahead for them in a world that has done terrible things to LGBTQ people (…and continues to do them).

Elsa finds that her magical power to create winter is dangerous and will scare people. Her song tells her to “conceal, don’t feel” — which every gay person can relate to (as well as anyone whose difference scares others). Finally, she must go off alone to sort out what it all means, because the last thing she wants to do is hurt anybody.

So many young gay people must hide their identities. My friend Jake wants very much to share with his siblings that he is gay. But when they were all home for Christmas, his sister said she purposely undermines her university’s “queer underground” because “they are all in sin, deceived by the devil.”

Definitely puts a damper on his desire to talk openly about himself. Definitely does not feel safe to be who he is. Yes, he could tell her anyway — surely his beloved sister would have a change of heart when she realizes he is one of “them” — wouldn’t she?? But Jake has no guarantee. His friends have been kicked out of their Christian families, disowned in the “love of Christ.” Who can blame him for carefully weighing his words, knowing he cannot take them back?

Elsa had to discover that the Elsa she was afraid of was terrifying, but the real Elsa is magnificent!

“Let it go, let it go. And I’ll rise like the break of dawn. Let it go, let it go. That perfect girl is gone. Here I stand in the light of day.”

If you are afraid of who you are, afraid God doesn’t love you or other such nonsense you’ve been told, please talk to God yourself. Don’t be afraid that because others disown you, God also disowns you. Go to that mountaintop as Elsa did, and talk to God. Ask him if he loves you. Ask him if you are okay with him. I say this with complete confidence because I know he will say yes! He loves you infinitely! All he wants, truly all he wants, is for you to know him more deeply. That is the entire agenda! By knowing him, you will love him more. By knowing him, you will love others more. And this sums up the entire Bible! (BAM!) No need to change a thing. (God is the one who changes us anyway.) No need to chase away these LGBTQ feelings you have. (If God doesn’t remove them, how could you?) No need to be afraid of who you are, my friend, because you are amazingly and miraculously made! (You are not, in any way, a mistake.)

Ask God to tell you about you – to lay aside the lies you’ve been taught by those who would change you. Ask God to show you who you really are, as he sees you, as he created you. Ask him to just be with you and wrap his arms around you.

You will be amazed at God’s overflowing love for you.
