Why Gender Diversity Is Natural and Always Has Been

Right now, across the U.S., politicians are working overtime to convince the public that gender diversity is something new—a dangerous “trend” or a threat to society. We hear it in school board meetings, on the campaign trail, and in legislation that seeks to erase transgender and nonbinary people from public life. But let’s be clear: gender diversity is not new. It’s as old as humanity itself.

From the dawn of time, people have lived and expressed gender in ways that don’t fit neatly into the modern “male or female” boxes. The only thing new is the political fearmongering designed to make us forget this truth.

Gender Diversity in History and Culture

Throughout history, countless cultures have embraced gender diversity. Indigenous nations across North America have recognized Two-Spirit people for centuries—individuals who embody both masculine and feminine spirits. In South Asia, the Hijra community has existed for thousands of years, holding spiritual and cultural roles of honor. Ancient Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome all had examples of gender-diverse individuals who were valued members of society.

This rich history tells us something vital: gender diversity is not an anomaly—it’s a natural part of the human story. What’s unnatural is trying to erase it.

Why Politicians Target Gender Diversity

So why do some leaders insist that being transgender or nonbinary is a new “fad” or a danger to children? Because fear is a powerful tool. By framing gender diversity as something “strange” or “modern,” they can rally their base, distract from real issues like healthcare or economic inequality, and pass harmful laws under the guise of “protecting kids.”

But make no mistake—these laws don’t protect anyone. They harm transgender youth by denying them healthcare, silencing their identities in schools, and forcing them into unsafe situations. And when we let fear rule, we all lose.

Science Affirms What History Shows

Modern science confirms what ancient cultures have always known: gender is complex, and diversity is natural. There are biological variations in chromosomes, hormones, and anatomy that don’t fit neatly into “male” or “female.” Likewise, gender identity—how we understand ourselves—exists on a spectrum.

When politicians claim that “science” proves gender is binary, they’re ignoring the reality that science itself tells a far more nuanced, beautiful story.

Faith Affirms It, Too

We often hear from Christians who say, “But God created only male and female.” Yet if we truly believe God is infinite, creative, and full of love, why would we think God’s creation is limited to two boxes? Genesis says we’re made in the image of God—and God’s image is expansive, diverse, and beyond our human categories.

When we affirm gender-diverse people, we are honoring the God who made them.

Why This Matters Now

In 2026, states and the federal government will actively push laws to ban transgender healthcare for minors, censor books with LGBTQ+ characters, and criminalize parents who affirm their trans children. This isn’t about “protecting children.” It’s about erasing anyone who doesn’t fit a rigid, outdated narrative.

But history and faith tell us a different story: gender diversity has always been part of humanity. And it always will be.

What We Can Do

  1. Educate ourselves and others about the history and reality of gender diversity.

  2. Challenge harmful narratives that label gender-diverse people as “new” or “unnatural.”

  3. Support transgender and nonbinary voices, especially those being targeted by laws and public attacks.

  4. Lead with love. Because love is always the truest reflection of both our humanity and God’s heart.

Gender diversity is not something to fear—it’s something to honor. It’s part of the stunning, endless spectrum of life that God created. The sooner we embrace this truth, the sooner we’ll build a world where everyone is free to live fully and authentically.
