Like everyone else, I awoke to hear the terrible news out of Orlando. Fifty dead and 53 injured in a nightclub, at the hands of a person who had pledged allegiance to a terror organization.
Here’s what the two Presidential hopefuls tweeted out in response to the tragedy:
Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism, I don’t want congrats, I want toughness & vigilance. We must be smart!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 12, 2016
(He actually tweeted about the shooting, then about a political point, and then this.) Here’s Hillary’s tweet:
Woke up to hear the devastating news from FL. As we wait for more information, my thoughts are with those affected by this horrific act. -H
— Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) June 12, 2016
As Chris Cillizza in Washington Post wrote:
The difference in tone is striking. Clinton is empathetic and sorrowful. Trump is triumphant and aggressive…
Trump’s tweet feels feels decidedly off in the context of the tragedy playing out in Orlando. That people are congratulating him about being right about the threat posed by ISIS feels like the sort of thing that could have certainly waited a few days — or forever — to publicize. Making a moment like this one about yourself — “I was right!” is the essence of Trump’s tweet — is a giant swing and miss when it comes to understanding what the broader nation requires of its leaders.
