It’s been a long time coming. Tonight we are going to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows I! This is the beginning of the end of the series. The books ended in 2007 with the publication of Deathly Hallows, and the movie series will end in 2011 when part 2 is released. I’m devoting my quick takes to all things HP today.

ten years is a long time:

Harry, Ron, and Hermione in 2000

Harry, Ron, Hermione in 2010

Kids these days, they grow up so fast.

Here are some of my favorite lines from the Harry Potter series:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone:

“After all, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure. You know, the Stone was really not such a wonderful thing. As much money and life as you could want! The two things most human beings would choose above all — the trouble is, humans do have a knack of choosing precisely those things that are worst for them.”

— Dumbledore

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets:

Ginny! said Mr. Weasley, flabbergasted. “Haven’t I taught you anything? What have I always told you? Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can’t see where it keeps its brain?”    – Mr. Weasley

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban:

“You think the dead we love ever truly leave us? You think we don’t recall them more clearly than ever in times of great trouble? Your father is alive in you, Harry, and shows himself most plainly when you have need of him.”

— Dumbledore

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire:

“Dark and difficult times lie ahead. Soon we must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy.”   — Dumbledore

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix:

Just read the whole book. It’s my favorite one.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince:

You are protected, in short, by your ability to love! ” said Dumbledore loudly. “The only protection that can possibly work against the lure of power like Voldemort’s! In spite of all the temptation you have endured, all the suffering, you remain pure of heart…You have flitted into Lord Voldemort’s mind without damage to yourself, but he cannot posses you without enduring mortal agony. I do not think he understands why, Harry, but then, he was in such a hurry to mutilate his own soul, he never paused to understand the incomparable power of a soul that is untarnished and whole.”  — Dumbledore

And probably my favorite piece of Harry Potter wisdom:

“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” – Dumbledore in HP and the Chamber of Secrets

This is just one of the funniest videos related to Harry Potter that I’ve seen. It gets me every time.

This doesn’t have to do with Harry Potter exactly, but have you seen this? Emma Watson (Hermione) cut her hair off! I can’t say I blame her though. She’s basically had to wear it exactly the same for the last ten years.

What do you think of the short cut?

And last but not least, the trailer for tonight’s event:
