Friends, I am going to be gone this weekend. I’m going to visit my dear friend and sister in Christ Kristin this weekend in Baltimore! She and I met in college, and I have not seen her since I graduated…almost four years ago! Woah. I’m so excited to see her and have some girl-time; but of course I will miss Atticus. We were chatting tonight and realized it will be our first weekend apart since we got married. It also... Read more

“The following prayer was composed by Bishop Ken Untener of Saginaw, drafted for a homily by Cardinal John Dearden in Nov. 1979 for a celebration of departed priests.  As a reflection on the anniversary of the martyrdom of Bishop Romero, Bishop Untener included in a reflection book a passage titled “The mystery of the Romero Prayer.” The mystery is that the words of the prayer are attributed to Oscar Romero, but they were never spoken by him.” It helps, now... Read more

I have been a Democrat for as long as I can remember. I proudly registered as a Dem when I turned 18 so I could vote in the next primary election. I was an enthusiastic supporter of John Kerry in 2004. Then I became authentically pro-life, and it’s been an increasing struggle ever since. I joined Democrats for Life. I proudly wore their button at the March for Life in 2006. It’s getting harder to name this identification with a... Read more

We had a wonderful time at the marriage and family conference, and I have a post in the works (in my brain) based on the amazing keynote speech from Bishop Kevin Rhodes ( who has recently moved from Harrisburg, PA to South Bend-Fort Wayne). But until then, I just wanted to post something somewhat unrelated to the conference itself. I was going through the day yesterday, and we attended two very good sessions on subfertility from a Catholic perspective and... Read more

** 1 ** Tonight Atticus and I are driving to West Lafayette to have dinner with his parents, then on to Notre Dame! Tomorrow is the Diocese of South Bend-Fort Wayne Marriage and Family Conference. It’s being held at ND, and Bishop Rhodes will be giving an address (he used to be at the Mount!) as well as Janet Smith of Contraception Why Not? fame. I’m very, very excited. Of course, in true March in South Bend fashion, despite it... Read more

We got a fresh lemon in our farm delivery last week, so I decided to make Lemon-Poppy Seed muffins. I know it’s Lent, but technically, I don’t think muffins count as sweets because they’re eaten for breakfast and not dessert. Now if you’re making chocolate-chip-snickers bar muffins, that might be a different story. Lemon-poppy seed is safe. 🙂 After struggling to find a good bread recipe for a while now, it’s nice to turn my attention to a baking project... Read more

This poem is from a wonderful Irish poet by the name of Eavan Boland. It is so short, but yet so evocative. It pulls some deep empathy from me from its few words of famine, oppression, and self-sacrifice. Beautiful and heartbreaking. Read it and go cry over a pint of Guiness. Quarantine – Eavan Boland In the worst hour of the worst season of the worst year of a whole people a man set out from the workhouse with his... Read more

I try not to post things which are directly political here, because that’s not really the point of this blog, but every once in a while, something important enough to mention comes along, and I have to add my 2c. I just read an article this morning by Archbishop Chaput of Denver, talking about the Senate “health”-care bill that the Democrats are going to attempt to push through this week. I know there’s a lot of confusion, double-speak, and political... Read more

Go to Joseph. Those are the words painted above the St. Joseph altar at Our Lady Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish, the historically Italian parish in Indy. Fittingly enough, St. Joseph is the patron saint of Sicily, where my Italian roots stem from. His feast, March 19, is a major feast of the Church, though it is often overshadowed by St. Patrick’s day, which is the 17th. In fact, because St. Joseph’s feast day is a solemnity, the obligation... Read more

** 1 ** I have now finished my second week of employment at the library. I really like the job so far; 15 hours per week, weekday mornings/early afternoons, so I can be home in time to make dinner before Atticus gets home. As I mentioned last week, it’s a more physically demanding job than I realized it would be, and my arms and legs are getting a pretty sweet workout three days a week. Since I’m staring at a... Read more
