Murdoch to charge for on-line news

Media tycoon Rupert Murdoch is going to try to make the leap from making money from newspaper subscriptions to making money from subscriptions to online news. He has announced that he will start charging people to access all of his news sites. That would include FoxNews.com, as well as his numerous newspaper properties around the world.

The Wall Street Journal charges for online access. So does World Magazine.

Though none of us like to pay for anything, isn’t this reasonable? Doesn’t someone have to pay the newsgatherers? But would you pay for this? If all the currently free sites and news aggregators started charging and if paper journalism totally migrated online, then would you pay? Do you think that is likely to happen, given the nature of the internet?
