DISCUSSION: Peace in the Middle East

On our post DISCUSS:  The War in the Middle East, commenter Reg proposed a provocative thought experiment, of the sort that vividly crystallizes the issues:

Let’s do a thought experiment. If the Palestinians all put down their weapons and stopped fighting, what would happen? There would be peace. If the Israelis laid down their weapons and stopped fighting, what would happen? There would not be a Jew left alive in the entire Middle East.

Can anyone say that he is wrong?

What would make both sides put down their weapons?
