Imprisonment without Trial for a “Hate Crime” Before It’s Committed

Canada is considering a bill that would impose house arrest and other punishments for “hate crimes” without a trial and before the alleged crimes are committed.

Michael Taube of the Wall Street Journal reports on this proposal in his article entitled Online Harms Act: Crime and Punishment, Not in That Order [behind a paywall].  He writes,

On Feb. 26 Mr. Trudeau’s Liberal government introduced Bill C-63, the Online Harms Act, which targets so-called hate speech on the internet. One of its provisions would enable anyone, with the consent of the federal attorney general, to “lay an information before a provincial court judge if the person fears on reasonable grounds that another person will commit” an offense. The judge could then issue a “peace bond” imposing conditions, including house arrest and electronic monitoring, on the defendant merely because it’s feared he could commit a hate crime.

Not only that, the bill gives anyone the right to file a complaint alleging that a person committed hate speech online.  The non-judicial Canadian Human Rights Commission could then impose a fine of up to $15,000, which would go to the person who filed the complaint!  Online troll wars and legitimate arguments will never be the same!

Among many other things, the bill would create a new speech crime: “advocating genocide.”  This could be punished by life imprisonment.

As we’ve seen, pastors teaching what the Bible says about homosexuality are being accused of “hate crimes.”  And supporters of Israel in the Hamas war and skeptics of transgenderism are being accused of “genocide.”

The UK Bans Puberty Blockers

Great Britain’s National Health Service, which operates the UK’s socialized medical system, has announced that it will no longer allow puberty blockers to be prescribed to children suffering from gender dysphoria.

That medication prevents the sexual development of pre-adolescent boys and girls who say they want to be the opposite gender, often making them sterile for life.

The decision came after an extensive review of the scientific research.  According to the NHS statement, “We have concluded that there is not enough evidence to support the safety or clinical effectiveness of PSH to make the treatment routinely available at this time.”

Comments Ryan Saavedra in The Daily Wire,

The investigation was launched after there was a massive uptick in the number of children who were being referred to the Gender Identity Development Service, a national health clinic in the U.K. The number went from 250 children in 2012 to more than 5,000 in 2022 as the transgender movement gained steam as a social trend and experts warned that it was having a contagion effect.

Now if only the American medical system would likewise follow the science and protect children instead of uncritically following transgender ideology!

Walking Back Defunding the Police

After the George Floyd protests, many progressive politicians championed defunding the police, with many District Attorneys in major cities embarking on “criminal justice reforms” that amounted to decriminalizing or refusing to prosecute offenses like shoplifting and drug pushing.

But now that crime is surging in those cities–especially the crimes that were decriminalized or no longer prosecuted–some of those politicians, facing angry voters, are changing their tune.  In his  Daily Caller article Dogged By Crime Concerns, Dems Walk Back Their Own Reforms Ahead Of 2024 Election, Jason Cohen reports on developments in New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.

Plus, Oregon, which decriminalized hard drugs, has now recriminalized them.
