Overcoming the Struggles of Modern Motherhood with Faith
Last Wednesday, October 2, 2024, I gave a live talk about overcoming the struggles of modern motherhood. You can check out the video here. I also wrote and shared here two articles entitled ”What Does It Mean to Be a Proverbs 31 Woman in Modern Times?” and “Do You Intertwine Motherhood with Christianity?” I wanted to go deeper into the topic of modern motherhood and being empowered by faith to overcome challenges.
Let’s start with a prayer.
“Heavenly Father, we come before You today seeking Your wisdom, guidance, and strength. We know that life can be overwhelming at times, but we are reminded that You are our ever-present help in times of trouble. We ask for Your peace and clarity as we discuss the struggles and triumphs of motherhood. Help us draw closer to You and lean on Your strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
The Unique Challenges Faced by Moms
Motherhood is one of the most rewarding yet demanding roles anyone can have. Whether you’re a married mom, a single mom, or a working single mom, the weight of responsibilities can sometimes feel like too much to carry. Society pressures us to be perfect—perfect wives, perfect mothers, perfect employees—but this unrealistic expectation often leaves us feeling inadequate. We are human, after all.
For single moms, the pressure is multiplied. You may feel like you have to take on both parental roles, manage finances alone, and deal with the emotional weight of raising children by yourself. And for working single moms, the challenge of balancing a job, taking care of your children, and maintaining some sense of normalcy can feel like running on empty.
Let’s not forget the maintenance of the home and car as well!!
Here’s the good news: You are not alone.
God sees every tear, every sleepless night, every moment of doubt. He sees your sacrifices and your heart. Proverbs 31:25 reads, “She is clothed with strength and dignity, and laughs at the days to come,” (usccb.org) This verse is a reminder that our strength doesn’t come from within ourselves alone. It comes from God who created us.
Understanding Inner Strength Through Faith
True strength is not about never feeling tired or overwhelmed. When you work hard, you get tired. It doesn’t matter if it is physical labor, metal labor or a combination of the two. True strength is recognizing that we don’t have to do it alone. We can rely on God’s strength when we are weak. Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me.” (usccb.org)
So, what does this look like in real life? It means when you’re at your wit’s end, you don’t have to be the “perfect” mom. You just need to be a mom who leans into Christ’s strength.
Jesus Himself said, “but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me” (2 Corinthians 12:9, usccb.org). Your vulnerability and humanity allow God’s power to shine through. Remember, it’s okay to admit when you’re struggling and to trust that God’s grace will sustain you.
Practical Steps to Build Resilience
Here are a few practical ways to build resilience through faith:
- Daily Prayer & Devotion: Start your day with a simple prayer asking God for the strength to carry you through the day. Spend time in His Word, even if it’s just five minutes.
- Time Management & Boundaries: Learn to say no when necessary and give yourself grace to rest.
- Ask for Help: Whether from God in prayer or from your support network, asking for help is not a sign of failure. It’s an act of wisdom and a sign of strength..
- Community Support: Get connected to a group of women who can encourage you, pray with you, and walk through life together. Look for groups with the same values.
Testimonies and Encouragement
The Bible is full of stories of women who persevered in faith. Take Ruth, for example; a widow, with no resources, yet her faith in God led her to a new life. Or consider Hannah, who prayed fervently for a child, and God heard her prayers, even after years of disappointment.
These stories show us that God is faithful. Isaiah 40:31 reads, “They that hope in the LORD will renew their strength, they will soar on eagles’ wings; They will run and not grow weary,
walk and not grow faint.” (usccb.org)
Know your testimony and share it with others. We all have a story where God has been there, nudged us and sometimes even pushed us. Share your story with other moms. Encourage them to share their story!
Be Encouraged by Faith
Remember that you are doing incredible things. While the challenges you face are real, your faith in God is even more powerful. Lean into prayer, lean on your community support and above all, know your God-given value.
Let’s pray:
“Heavenly Father, thank You for the strength You give us. We pray for every mother that reads this or who is thought of as this is prayed. Please fill her heart with peace, her spirit with resilience, and her life with joy. Help us to trust You in all things, knowing that Your strength is sufficient for every challenge. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
May God bless you as you continue to navigate the beautiful, challenging journey of motherhood.
