The American Pastors Network is encouraging Christians to commit this nation to prayer through a new “52 Tuesdays” prayer initiative, whereby believers come together to pray specifically for our nation every week on Tuesdays.
“We’ve all heard the phrase, ‘Prayer changes things,’ but do we believe it?” the network asks. “The apostle Paul said, ‘Pray without ceasing.’ James said, ‘The effectual prayer of a righteous man accomplishes much.'”
“As Christians, we should place great value on prayer—personal and national—because God does. Let’s pray together, believing God will hear and answer!”
Other national prayer initiatives, the group highlights, include the:
iVoterGuide Prayer Initiative, which provides a guide for Christians to pray for their elected officials.
“Our religious liberty is in the hands of those we elect,” the network says. “Only prayer will guide their hearts wisely. Everything we cherish — faith, family, freedom, finances — is in the hands of the elected officials we send to Washington and our state capitals.”
The initiative is based on 1 Timothy 2, in which the Apostle Paul urges believers to pray for those in authority so we can “live peaceful and quiet lives” which “pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved.”
Believers are encouraged to pray for leaders by name for nine (9) officials they personally have the authority to elect.
The American Family Association pledge, also encourages believers to pray for our nation’s leaders.
The Rev. Franklin Graham recently said,
“Our nation seems to be unraveling in hatred. There are forces out to destroy our country and the freedoms we all love. I hope everyone reading this will stop and take a minute to pray for this country, for our leaders, and especially for our president.”
Christians can also participate in The Return: Attend a National Day of Prayer and Repentance in Washington, D.C. on September 26.
This national and global day of prayer and repentance on the National Mall, and virtually online globally, is based on 2 Chronicles 7:14:
“For if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
There are also many free resources at Intercessors for America. The group offers a daily prayer guide for believers to pray for specific government officials, and gives updates about current news, world events, upcoming legislation and other topics.
Another organization, Vote Your Values, has created numerous prayer resources for believers, including a Prayer Guide for Electing Righteous Leaders, The Power of Praying the Word in National Intercession, Honoring God as a Legislator Prayer Guide, among others.
American Renewal Project’s founder David Lane argues that in order for America to survive, “Prayer must be established in the home, culture, and church.” He cites A.W. Pink, who said, “Apart from the grace and power of God, deterioration is stamped on all human plans,” and urges Christians to pick a day to fast and pray for America together.
“Contemporary America willfully ignores that there is no safety in distance from God,” Lane says, also citing Proverbs 14:34: “Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a disgrace to any people.”
