Not literally–or even figuratively, for that matter. What she’s going through is a series of “Ask a ________” posts, where she’s allowing readers to throw their questions at people who hold to various positions on hell. First up was Edward Fudge, well known advocate of Conditional Immortality and author of The Fire that Consumes. Next up is Robin Parry, author of The Evangelical Universalist. Incidentally, Parry also edited the latest edition of Fudge’s book. This series is definitely worth a... Read more

No, I’m not talking about my new cologne. I’m talking about this image, which I posted on the Hellbound? Facebook page today: So far it’s generated 41 likes, 25 shares and a whole lotta traffic. However, it also prompted some less than enthusiastic responses, with at least one person writing to say it was “incredibly wrong” of me to post it. What do you think? Was I wrong to post this cartoon? (Oops, I did it again…) If so, on... Read more

From a viewer who watched it last week: My husband has been taking baby-steps out of a hard-line religious system and into grace for the entire 12 years of our marriage. Actually, his departure started with a complete rejection of all Christianity for seven years prior to our meeting. I think he needed that time to clean his palate . It has been a long haul, and the struggles definitely grew my patience (thank you Father). As someone who was... Read more

I wouldn’t identify myself as a Trekkie. I’m more of the Star Wars equivalent (a “Warsie”?). But I am a fan of the original Star Trek series as well as the movies that came out of it. My favorite film in the series is Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which features Ricardo Montalban as the genetically engineered villain Khan Noonien Singh, who escapes from a 15-year exile on a planetary wasteland to exact revenge on the man he... Read more

I’ve spent a fair bit of time on this blog talking about belief formation, particularly within the framework of the Wesleyan Quadrilateral, which outlines four different potential sources of theological conclusions–Scripture, Tradition, Reason and Experience. In a recent email exchange, Michael Hardin, author of The Jesus Driven Life and co-founder of Preaching Peace, offered a Christological perspective on this discussion and has been kind enough to allow me to re-post it here: How is Jesus known? The short and simple... Read more

That’s the name of a script I co-wrote earlier this year with Ben Eisner, who was my director of photography on Hellbound?. We are just launching the film’s social media campaign, starting with the requisite Facebook and Twitter pages. Here’s a brief synopsis: In the summer of 1966, world famous monk and peace activist Thomas Merton falls in love with a nursing student half his age, plunging him into the most agonizing predicament of his life. As he endeavors to... Read more

That’s when we first screened Hellbound? in public. It was an inauspicious beginning. About 40 people–and two pigs–turned up for the 11pm showing of what was billed as a “mystery item” in the schedule. It took place in a tent with fireflies occasionally flickering across the screen. I was pretty tense seeing as it was going to be shown in standard definition instead of Blu-ray, and I wasn’t confident of the quality. More importantly, three members of my cast–Frank Schaeffer, Michael... Read more

Finally getting around to reading Walter Wink, particularly his book Engaging the Powers. It’s an interesting experience b/c I bought a used copy in San Francisco that someone had already marked up and dog-eared. Then as I began reading it, the binding came apart. So now it’s more like a sheaf of papers than an actual book, and reading it presents somewhat of an ergonomic challenge. That said, this book is an invaluable complement to so many other people I’ve... Read more
