Numbers 31: Support Your Spiritual Leaders

Numbers 31: Support Your Spiritual Leaders 2012-07-25T12:56:27-04:00

Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part, as the Lord commanded Moses. -Numbers 31:41

One of the final acts of Moses was to authorize and lead a war on the Midianites. This was probably a tough one, as Moses had married into a Midianite family and had lived in their land for forty years. But the focus of the post-war activities was not on Moses, but rather on how to divide the spoils of war.

Eleazar the priest was one who represented the Lord at the tabernacle. As a spiritual leader, God commanded that Eleazar be given part of the financial support as well. This was not to provide a lucrative reward for his leadership, but to fairly support the person who served in spiritual leadership.

For all the hype about the few religious leaders who earn riches at the expense of others, most who serve God do so with very humble means. They work hard to serve the Lord and are deserving of our support. Whether a pastor, missionary, or other ministry leader, this chapter was a good reminder to me that those who serve the Lord deserve our care. It’s easier to send cash to a sponsored kid in the developing world, but God calls us to support our spiritual leaders as well.
