Joshua 22: Rest and Remember

Joshua 22: Rest and Remember 2012-10-17T09:48:35-04:00

“Be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you: to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” -Joshua 22:5

War had ended. Land had been divided. Now was time for rest.

Yet Joshua reminded the Israelites of one additional issue: remembrance. He wrote, “Be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you: to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

Remembering included love for God and obedience to his ways. When we forget God, we live for self and disobey him. When we remember him, we live according to his ways. It is that simple, and that difficult, to apply.

How can we better “remember” the Lord? Scripture offers many insights. Psalm 1 teaches to meditate on the law of the Lord day and night. Prayer and worship are offered as ways people in the Bible remembered the Lord. The Lord’s Supper is used by Christians to remember the suffering of Jesus and serves as a central focus of worship.

Today, don’t forget the Lord. Remember what he has done, is doing, and has promised for our future. When we do, we will walk in his ways, leaving a legacy that honors him and impacts others.
