2 Samuel 7: You Have Brought Me This Far

2 Samuel 7: You Have Brought Me This Far January 17, 2013

“Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?” -2 Samuel 7:18

David’s response to God’s answer regarding the temple is an example for us all: “Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?” These brief words offer four important insights.

First, God is the One who answers, “Who am I?” We are not defined by our culture, family, friends, career, success, or lack of any of these factors. God defines who we are.

Second, the Lord is Sovereign. He is supreme and controls all things, including every second of your day today.

Third, God provide the answer to “What is my family?” We may complain about the family we have, but it is a blessing from God. We are to thank him for each member and do all we can to show love and respect to those closest to us in this life.

Fourth, God is also the answer to how far we go in life. We may aim to be successful, rich, famous, or some other pursuit, but God ultimately controls how far we go. We are better off asking what he wants rather than pursuing our own interests. His plan is always better in the end.

“Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?” Let this be our prayer today.
