But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side, and there is no adversary or disaster. -1 Kings 5:4

As king, Solomon was responsible for the people of his nation, a daunting job for any person. Yet he said, “But now the Lord my God has given me rest on every side, and there is no adversary or disaster.” Life had gone well, and to what did he credit this rest? God.

God had given peace for a purpose. This purpose was to prepare Solomon for the next step in his service to God. In his case, it was to prepare to build the temple. What about you?

In our lives, God often provides rest for the same reason. He has a plan for us that will demand much time and energy. Yet before these activities launch, he has given the gift of rest. He has designed us to focus our hearts and physical energy to prayer and preparation for where he leads and what he leads us to do next.

Today, whether you are at rest or in need of rest, thank God for the purpose he has placed in your heart. When you rest, realize it is not simply ceasing from activity…it is a gift from God.
