10 And the LORD said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes 11 and be ready by the third day, because on that day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. -Exodus 19:10-11
Jesus offers all-access to worship God. But Exodus 19 reveals that there is still some importance to preparing for worship. Just as we might invest much time and energy into preparing for a vacation or a concert, there are times when we should set aside time simply to prepare for worship of God.
In the case of Moses and the Israelites, the preparation involved rituals of cleansing and boundaries. The areas of purity and space were of great importance. Stillness and listening were required.
How could these same principles apply to our worship of God? Do we need to stop? To set ourselves apart from ordinary practices or human desires? Do we need a change of location to focus on God?
We no longer follow the law given to Moses, yet it is not completely irrelevant. Even now, God may use the principle of preparation to change our hearts as we come to worship him.
