Exodus 20: The First Commandment

Exodus 20: The First Commandment April 6, 2012

1 And God spoke all these words:

2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

3 “You shall have no other gods before me.” -Exodus 20:1-3

Exodus 20 is the chapter where God reveals the Ten Commandments to Moses. We debate their display in courthouses today, but their original context highlighted God’s greatness rather than political correctness. The first commandment is the summary of them all: You shall have no other gods before me.

The people of the neighboring lands worship a variety of gods. But Israel was to be different. One God and only one God.

Still today, a central belief of both Jews and Christians is that God is one. He is our Creator and Sustainer.

When we say other gods are okay or just as good as the God of Scripture, we miss the main point: The Lord is God. This is the first commandment.
