Deuteronomy 25: Honesty Matters

^“13 Do not have two differing weights in your bag—one heavy, one light. ¹⁴ Do not have two differing measures in your house—one large, one small. ¹⁵ You must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. ¹⁶ For the Lord your God detests anyone who does these things, anyone who deals dishonestly.” -Deuteronomy 25:13-16

One thing God despises is a lack of honesty. This was true in the time Deuteronomy was written and it is today. Specifically, the Lord demanded honesty in business regarding weights and measures. In that time, grain, gold, and many other items were sold or bartered based on weight. A sneaky business person could have two different sets of weights. An accurate one would be used only when it was to his advantage. An inaccurate one, either heavier or lighter, would then be used to create a financial advantage in buying and selling.

A person who lives for God will use honest in business and leave the results to him. This convicting principle applies still today. The business person who cheats the system may achieve a short-term gain but gives away integrity, a commodity more difficult to earn than money.

Remember today that honesty is of more value than your finances; integrity of greater worth than what you can buy.
