Judges 17: Gods of Our Own Creation

¹⁰ Then Micah said to him, “Live with me and be my father and priest, and I’ll give you ten shekels of silver a year, your clothes and your food.” ¹¹ So the Levite agreed to live with him, and the young man became like one of his sons to him. -Judges 17:10-11

Forgetting God leads to replacing God. In Judges 17, Micah was so far removed from knowledge of the God of Israel that is made sense to him to ordain his own priest who would serve according to his own wishes.

Some have called America a Jesus haunted culture. In other words, the idea of Jesus and worship of him remains, yet much of the Bible’s information about Jesus has been forgotten. A memory continues to haunt our culture, but true knowledge of him is often missing. In such a spiritual vacuum, other ideas fill the void of true worship of God. This can include atheism, pluralism, or any other hybrid that replaces God with other choices for worship.

How can those of us who follow Jesus respond? First, we must continue live for the Christ of the Bible. Second, we must continue to communicate the message of Jesus that is accurate, calling others to examine what the Word says and its implications for our lives.
