“If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.” -2 Corinthians 11:30
Should we really boast about our weaknesses? That’s what Paul did. That’s a tough one. But if Paul could, maybe I should try. Here are a few of mine:
-I bite my fingernails
-I like cookies, especially chocolate chip
-I often play Barbies with my daughters
-I am a Baptist who both dances (with my kids) and listens to NPR
-I once curbed a church van over a median and pretended I did it on purpose
I could add many more to my list. You could too. We all have our weaknesses, both humorous and serious. Why? None of us is perfect.
And that’s Paul’s point. God is the only perfect one, leaving no room for us to boast except in our weakness and God’s greatness. It’s easy to say, “Look what I have done.” For some reason, it’s tougher to stand among skeptics and declare, “Look what God is doing in my life.” Secretly, we enjoy taking credit for what God is doing in and through us. It’s part of our human nature. We are driven to succeed and then seek attention from others who would notice.
Here’s a comforting thought: God notices everything we do and loves us just as we are. No need to impress. He wants us. All of us. Let us remember today that we are loved in our weakness by the One without weakness.
