Day 3 of a Series on Social Stories Click here to read Day 1 and one of the Social Stories, “What is a mistake?”
When I first read through the list of stories, I was disappointed. One because they all seemed so simple, and two because so many people thought they would be good for the boys. Here are a few of the titles:
Why are gifts important? How to shake hands When it’s my turn to listen Three gum manners that matter How to lose a game and win friends How to take a shorter shower Restating with respect at school How to write a true storyWhen I read the list to Jeff, he commented, “Well, I know a lot of grad students who should probably read that book.”
And then I remembered about MIT’s Charm School. It takes place every January to help students who may not have read enough Social Stories as kids. The website for charm school says:
Participate in mini-classes on a wide variety of “charming” subjects, take in the wisdom of our Charm instructors, and even earn your “Ch.D.” (Doctoral degree in Charm). And by mini, we mean mini – each Charm Class is only 15 minutes long! That means you can take in 4 different subjects in just an hour and be that much closer to earning your degree.
Here are a few classes you can take at Charm School:
The truth is, most of us could benefit from a little charm school. But until they open it up to homeschoolers, we’ll just have to stick with the social stories.
