I noticed a while back that posts seem to take on a life of their own. I start out writing about something very specific, and then next thing I know a theme has emerged. I’m starting to wonder if weeks don’t work the same way. Last week, without having planned it, I wrote four posts about race. Other weeks took off in different directions – physical education, the joys of homeschool, the miseries of homeschool.
After yesterday, I’m starting to wonder if this week’s theme isn’t going to be something like What if you think your children are jerks?
Today, as we were driving to a special spot in the woods, a spot the boys had been looking forward to for a week, we stopped at a light where a homeless man was asking for “any help” we could give.
“Mommy, do you have any money for him?”
“Nope. I only have credit cards. But you boys have two bagels. You could give him one and then split the other one between you. Do you want to do that?”
“No, not really,” said Ezra.
“Are you sure? You already had breakfast, and we can get more food when we get home. What do you think, Zach?”
“No. I really want the whole bagel to myself.”
Yup. Those are my boys. So proud.
