Challenging beliefs

Challenging beliefs September 18, 2013

There is no doubt that challenge builds strength. It is a key theme of life. Muscles that are challenged to lift heavier and heavier loads become stronger as a result of the training. Minds that are challenged to solve more and more difficult problems become increasingly adept by the experience.

An excellent way to turn your beliefs into certainties is by challenging them. Challenging your beliefs can refine and purify them, just as precious metals are purified by extreme heat. Yes, the beliefs that cannot stand the scrutiny will surely evaporate, but then if they were so weak and unfounded what good were they doing you? Challenging your beliefs strengthens the valid ones and rids you of the useless ones.

We often take comfort in our beliefs and then fear to challenge them. Does that really make sense? Our beliefs guide our lives. Can we truly be comforted by the ones which don’t hold water?

When you consider something to be a belief, there is some element of uncertainty in it. If you truly value the belief, then you’ll want to become more and more certain of it. You’ll want to eventually get to the point where it is no longer something you simply believe but rather something that you know with full and unfailing confidence. Challenge is the way to do that.

What do you believe? Why? Take a good, hard, honest look at it. Be the most virulent skeptic you can become. Put your beliefs to the test. Challenge them. Refine them. Purify them. Make them strong and solid. It will take effort, and yet it will yield abundant positive results. By challenging each belief you compel yourself to make it a certainty in your life.
