What really matters to you? Think of something you desire. It can be anything, something whimsical or profound. Now ask yourself why. What is it about reaching that desire that will bring fulfillment to you? Is it the thing itself or is it the process of achieving it? Or is it because it will lay the groundwork for achieving something else? Be honest with yourself and then for whatever answer you come up with, ask yourself why it is you want that. Continue asking why. The superficial desires will lead you to ever deeper desires. Keep asking why. Eventually you’ll reach the realm of those things that matter most to you. Eventually you’ll come in contact with the core purposes that drive your life.
Even many destructive desires have their roots in more positive purposes. By discovering those purposes, you can find new and more positive ways to express them, and thereby transcend the need for destructive behavior.
The more you know, and understand, and stay in touch with what really matters, the more effective you can become in every endeavor. Because when you’re connected with what really matters, every action has a purpose, a real and meaningful purpose. That can make an enormous difference. It’s the difference between halfhearted attempts and inspired achievements. With a clear and present purpose to drive you forward, anything you choose to accomplish becomes not only possible, but very likely to happen.
A clear sense of purpose will transform obstacles into opportunities, frustration into determination, defeat into victory.
