Inspire yourself into action

How do you inspire yourself to do what must be done?

First, think of all the good things that will happen, and think of the specific ways in which your life will be better, when you achieve your goals and reach your dreams.

Next, consider the bad things that will happen if you do nothing. Visualize the pain and disappointment you’ll feel, and resolve to avoid it at all costs.

Then, give your word to someone else that you’ll get it done. Make your commitment public. Put yourself in a situation in which you’ll be embarrassed if you fail to take action. The fear of humiliation is very strong, so put that fear to work in your favor.

On top of that, offer yourself a reward for getting the work done. It can be a lunch at a favorite restaurant, a book you’ve been wanting to buy, or just time doing something you really would like to do. Then hold yourself to the bargain and don’t cheat, because if you do you’re only cheating yourself.

Finally, stand up, take a deep breath, and take a few enthusiastic strides forward. Feel how good that feels. Consider how great it will be to continue feeling that way — alive, active and effective. Get started and keep on going until the job is done.
