How do you get yourself to feel like it when you don’t feel like it? How do you get yourself to do what you know you must do, but you know you don’t feel like doing?
First, remind yourself that you can feel however you choose to feel. Your feelings are not imposed upon you from outside. They’re intentionally selected on the inside. Though your feelings may seem like an automatic response, they’re not. They are yours to choose.
Then, remind yourself of why you must do whatever it is you must do. Connect the task with a purpose that’s deep within you, a purpose that is authentically yours. Yes, there must be a good reason, or else you would not have to do it. That reason may not be immediately obvious, so do a little digging. Somewhere, somehow, the task is connected to your purpose. Think about it, and find that connection.
Finally, think of how good it feels to make a difference. Focus on that feeling, that good, positive, satisfying feeling of a job well done. You’ve felt it before and now you have the opportunity to feel it again. If you’re so concerned about your feelings, then here’s a chance to create a really good one.
Go ahead, take the first step. It doesn’t really feel so bad. In fact, once you’re going it feels pretty good. Keep going, keep working, keep taking step after step until the job is done. You really did feel like it after all.
