Do you really need it?

Do you really need it? January 9, 2015

Before you spend a lot of time and effort striving after something, ask yourself. Do you really need it? Do you really even want it? Instead of just assuming you must have it, challenge your assumption. Remind yourself that you’ll be spending precious and irreplaceable time to get it. Consider that there are many other, perhaps much more meaningful things you could be doing.

Is it something you must really have, or do, or know? Or are you just in the habit of acquiring for the sake of acquiring?

You are immensely capable, and with enough commitment you can achieve whatever you choose to achieve. The key part of that reality is your level of commitment. If you set off after something not really all that important to you, your commitment will eventually wane. And then, all the time and effort you initially put into it is mostly wasted.

There are plenty of things you are passionate about, plenty of things that will add great value and richness to your life. Those are the things to focus upon. Those are the things to put your time and energy into achieving. But if you burn yourself out running after stuff that really doesn’t matter, you won’t have any energy left for seeking the stuff that does.

Nothing is more fulfilling than achieving what you truly desire to achieve. Nothing is more frustrating than putting vast amounts of time and energy into something that has no real meaning for you.

Give yourself a break. Celebrate and respect the true purpose of your life. Remind yourself to ask yourself if you really need it and if you really want it. Focus your passion, your commitment, your time, effort and skills on what matters and enjoy the fulfillment that is uniquely yours to create.
