Embracing change

Embracing change January 4, 2015

The good things we seek rarely come to us in exactly the way we have imagined. If we’re constantly saying no in order to avoid even the slightest discomfort or inconvenience, we soon find ourselves missing out on the richness of life, wondering why our dreams never materialize. We all desire good things for our lives, and yet we must realize that for life to get better it must change. Great things are always coming your way and they are coming in the form of changes. Make sure you say yes to the best of them.

Open yourself up to the big changes by finding positive value in the small changes. Even on a small scale, change can energize you. That’s one reason why travel is such a popular leisure-time activity. Traveling to a new and different place can have a profoundly stimulating effect on the mind, the body and the spirit. But you don’t have to travel far from home to enjoy to benefits of change. Eat in a new restaurant or, better yet, try eating a type of cuisine you’ve never experienced. Spend time looking through a website that covers a subject you’ve never explored. Seek out and get to know new people. Turn down a road that you’ve never been on before and find out where it leads. There are countless ways in which you can inject a healthy dose of change into your everyday life. Make a point to do it on a regular, continuing basis and you’ll become a much more interesting and dynamic person. You’ll also strengthen your appreciation for the value of change, and increase your own confidence in responding to change.

Though the little changes are easy and fun, the big changes involve significant effort and they can be painful. That does not necessarily make them undesirable. Though the immediate pain of change may be acute, consider the eventual pain that would result from refusing to change.

Embrace change before it engulfs you. It is better for you to change than for you to be changed. When you choose to change, you can do it on your own terms. When you are forced to change, it is much less desirable.

Your life flows through a dynamic, changing world. At any point in time, you have two choices. You can make your life better, or you can allow it to become worse. As much as you would like for it to stay exactly the same, that is not possible because everything around you is changing. You are moving through the world. It is impossible to stand still. If you try to stand still you will surely get shoved backwards, or in some other direction you have not chosen.

Change is a crucial and ever-present part of life, and it is here to stay. It can represent a formidable challenge. It can bring great opportunity, just like life itself. Change is yours to live. Take a deep breath. Know that you are up to the task. Make change your friend, through effort, awareness, commitment and confidence and it will continually bring you abundant rewards.
