National Weekend of Prayer for Melissa Lucio: The Rev. Dr. Jeff Hood
This is Reverend Dr. Jeff Hood. I’m a long-time organizer against the death penalty, and I am a faith advisor, spiritual advisor on death row in Texas. As we enter into some of the most holy days on the Christian calendar, we are reminded of a story of death and resurrection. We are reminded of a story of injustice.
You see, Jesus says in Matthew 25, what you have done to the least of these you have done to me.
Melissa Lucio was taken up. She was placed before a crowd. She was declared guilty. The crowd demanded she be executed. For some time, Lucio has lived in this space of people demanding that she be executed. There have been so many people who have washed their hands of the case. There have been so many people who have stood aside as she is marched towards the execution chamber…but thankfully in this circumstance…you have an opportunity to do something…before she gets to that execution chamber…you have an opportunity to step in as she is being led to that moment of execution…you have an opportunity to pray.
May we join Melissa. May we join all of her supporters. May we join people of good will all over the state of Texas, all over the nation and even all over the world in declaring… We are not going to stand by and do nothing. We are not going to wash our hands. We are not going to watch Melissa led to the execution chamber and not say anything.
We are going to stand with Melissa Lucio at this moment at this hour… at this time…we are going to pray with our feet. We are going to pray with the entirety of our souls. We are going to move on this national weekend of prayer for Melissa Lucio,
So!!!
Move your feet.
Move your lips.
Move your body.
God…grant us the strength…grant us the determination…that we may we become part of your great plan to stop the execution of Melissa Lucy…to stop this injustice…and to set her free.
Amen!
