I never knew her. Then again, maybe I did. I have seen her in the streets of Dallas. I saw her in Ferguson. She was in Baltimore. Heather Heyer has been in the millions and millions of people who have dared to fight against injustice. She has been with us all along. I never knew her. Actually, I guess I did.
What was she thinking in the moments before that car smashed her body? Who was she standing with? Who got the call that she had perished? Did she see the face of the murderer? When did she actually die? We don’t know the answers to these questions yet. We only know that she was a freedom fighter. We only know that she had the faith. We only know that she was martyred in the midst of the struggle.
Heather will be with us from this day forth. Heather has joined the great cloud of witnesses struck down in the struggle for justice. Guiding. Teaching. Loving. Fighting. Their presence is divine.
How far are you willing to go?
I suggest you follow Heather Heyer.
God will meet you there.
There will be those who question my designation of Heather as a martyr…
In the name of Jesus…eat shit.
Don’t rest Heather Heyer…we need you with us.
Amen.
