When I was growing up, we/I believed everyone who disagreed with us/me about God was going to hell. I continued to cling to and organize my life around the border of saved and unsaved for a long time. Then I started doing some deeper reading about the limitless love of God and everything began to change.
I am not interested in your borders. I am not interested in your nationalities. I am not interested in the mistaken belief that we need to live behind borders. I am interested in the God who loves the world and that is all.
When you raise your guns to protect a mythical border…you are raising your guns at God. When you declare disdain for people in other countries…you are declaring your disdain for God. When you think that our country exists to offer light and sanctuary to the world…you are assuming that God only lives here. When you lift up borders as the answer…you are not lifting up God as the answer.
Jesus wouldn’t close our borders. Jesus also wouldn’t talk about the United States as the only place on earth worthy of inhabitance. Jesus wouldn’t be a patriot one way or the other. Jesus inhabits every nation on earth…how could he be partial toward any?
Conversations about borders are not political. Conversations about borders are a deeply spiritual matter. Failing to understand the limitless love and presence of God is failing to understand God. We are not the light of the world…God is. The borders we keep talking about divide God’s children. I work and pray for a day where borders will be no more. This is the path of the borderless God.
Amen.
