The Final Prayer. / On the Death of Jack Dillard. / My Grandfather.
I’ve been hesitant to write about it.
Sometimes words just can’t capture the totality of loss.
The tumult of disagreement never destroyed our relationship.
Throughout it all, we spoke as often as we could.
Though often imperfect, I never doubted his love.
In the end, I was afforded one last visit.
This was our final prayer.
God
We come to you
We are doubtful
Death is near
We need you
Break into our lives
Silence any distractions
Take over this very moment
God
We come to you
We are scared
Death is near
We need you
God break into our lives
God silence any distractions
God take over this very moment
God
We come to you
We are hardened
Death is near
We need you
God fill us with your faith
God fill us with your hope
God fill us with your love
There is salvation in faith
There is salvation in hope
There is salvation in love
Do you believe in faith?
Do you believe in hope?
Do you believe in love?
Yes.
We believe in faith.
Yes.
We believe in hope.
Yes.
We believe in love.
God
Hear us
Right Now
Hear us
Through the affirmation of faith
Through the affirmation of hope
Through the affirmation of love
There is salvation.
Do you believe?
Yes.
We believe.
Upon your confession of belief…
I declare you to be full of faith.
I declare you to be full of hope.
I declare you to be full of love.
From this moment forth…
Let there be no doubt
God is your faith.
God is your hope.
God is your love.
God is yours.
The world didn’t give it.
The world can’t take it away.
God is all that you have needed.
God is all that you need.
God is all that you will ever need.
God is all.
The mystery is in the magic.
The magic is in the mystery.
You don’t have to understand.
Just go.
Eternity is yours.
I love you.
Amen.
I kissed him gently on his forehead…and told him that I’d see him again soon.
Driving away, I wished that I could stay there forever…but life doesn’t work that way.
Now, I’m left with the hope of resurrection…and that is enough.
Amen.
