The Heresy of Church

The Heresy of Church March 19, 2017

We were driving along in our neighborhood, my son observed our local park and blurted out, “Why aren’t they going to church?” My other son responded frankly, “Jesus never went to church. They’re just doing what Jesus did.” I found the interaction of my young twins to be particularly insightful. While one could argue that Jesus went to religious services, such an argument betrays Jesus’ command for his followers to individually be the church. Jesus talks about making disciples not creating institutions. Perhaps, those at the park were simply being who God created them to be. There is no other way to follow Jesus. As I sit in an institutional church, I’m affirmed in my suspicion that Jesus resides elsewhere.

Amen.
