In Matthew 25:40, Jesus said, “What you have done to the least of these, you have done to me.” Last year in a metropolitan suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, a young unarmed and naked mentally ill veteran by the name of Anthony Hill was running around his apartment complex. Concerned residents called police and Dekalb County Officer Robert Olsen responded to the scene. When Hill trotted towards him, Olsen shot and killed Hill. In those moments, Hill was the least and most vulnerable amongst us. Jesus has declared that he becomes the least and most vulnerable amongst us. In those moments, Anthony Hill became the incarnation of Jesus. If we want to live in a more just and compassionate society, we would do well to look to the incarnation of Jesus in Hill and learn to prevent what happened to him from ever happening again. While I am pleased that Officer Robert Olsen was indicted earlier today for Hill’s murder, I will not stop praying with my feet until we get these murderous cops off the street.
Amen.
