“What were they thinking?”

I almost didn’t write this piece. People kept telling me how nice the people in the photograph are. I don’t doubt it. One question remains.

“What were they thinking?”

Pictured are 5 United Methodist ministers in the North Texas Annual Conference. The picture was taken at a United Methodist camp dedicated to educating the next generation. One question remains.

“What were they thinking?”

This photograph is disturbing. A United Methodist minister is pointing her fingers in the shape of a gun directly at the camera. The United Methodist ministers all have mug shots on their shirts. The United Methodist ministers are all posing in various ways seeking to mimic hip-hop culture. I could go on and on. The bottom line is that this photograph intentionally seeks to make a mockery of the experiences of black people. One question remains.

“What were they thinking?”

The photograph is racist. The insensitivity that it takes to take a picture like this is beyond egregious. I can’t believe that the North Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church hasn’t done more about it. I’m sure the continued segregation amongst their churches plays a role in the subdued response. Regardless, these folks need cultural sensitivity training immediately.   There will be many who disagree. There will be many who wish that I hadn’t shared this picture. They will be the reason we keep seeing racist pictures like this.

Amen.
