Sunday Lent Links: Books, Movies, Penance, and YouTube Eucharistic Adoration March 16, 2014

The Virgin Adoring the Host
Jean August Dominque, The Virgin Adoring the Host
Music for your Sunday, with a slideshow: Rossini’s O Salutaris, recorded live during Eucharistic Adoration.

Frank Weathers posts the 1808 “Little Guide to Lent.” Or you can see the original text here, on Google books.  Want to understand Church history? Read historic documents.

Darwin Catholic posts St. Josemaria quotes on penance.  Confirming what I’d long suspected: If you want to be a saint, love God, do your work, and don’t complain.

An almsgiving opportunity: St. Augustine set to Rhythm & Blues. Sam Rocha’s recording an album, and he needs recording money.  Hard not to like.

Not a Lent Link, but if you’re home sick on a rainy Sunday . . . I watched Charade, per Joseph Susanka’s suggestion.  I had my doubts at all the moments you’d expect me to have my doubts, but the ending clinches it.  Neatly done.

Book Tip: St. Josemaria Escriva can sink you if you read him without a good grounding in Catholic spirituality.  Eric Sammon’s book Holiness for Everyone will set you straight.  Readable, encouraging, and rock solid.  It’s on my short list.  Highly recommended.
