A friend of mine, and co-author of a book we are writing (with Chris Folmsbee) on the Jesus Creed for high school students, Syler, won a free Prius through a Cubs raffle. Read his story… Anyone have a story of tell of something won? Read more

Thanks to Sherrie Lowly for telling her story. Larry Hurtado, one of our fine New Testament scholars, now has a website. Leading me to ask, If Larry, who’s next? Jim’s reminder is always good to hear. Tim Dalrymple, over at Patheos’ fine website, describes the CLS v. Martinez case with admirable clarity. Tony Jones begins a new, important series Kenda Dean, Almost Christian: What the Faith of Our Teenagers is Telling the American Church  John Ortberg: well or fence? Derek... Read more

We were visiting a church recently when both Kris and I noticed the T-shirt the usher was wearing. Bright red with big white letters: “What did Jesus say to the Cubs?” “Don’t do nothin’ til I get back!” In church. During the offering.  Read more

Are evangelical Christians poor, uneducated, Southern and white? (Not that anyone has anything against any of the groups.)  This is the question Brad Wright asks and probes in the 4th chap of his excellent new book, Christians Are Hate-Filled Hypocrites…and Other Lies You’ve Been Told: A Sociologist Shatters Myths From the Secular and Christian Media . Many people say these things. A WaPo writer, Michael Weisskopf, says “Evangelicals are largely poor, uneducated, and easy to command.” If you had to... Read more

We’re living in days where false images of evangelicals abound. The knack here is not to play the victim card and start blaming everyone else. The knack is to describe the scene. Which leads me to a new book… Steve Wilkens and Don Thorsen, both profs at Azusa Pacific, have a new book that takes on misperceptions of evangelicals. I like the title: Everything You Know about Evangelicals Is Wrong (Well, Almost Everything): An Insider’s Look at Myths and Realities... Read more

Did you see this? What are your thoughts? The White House invited four of the country’s top evangelical pastors to attend President Obama’s speech this morning [recently] calling for immigration reform. The move is a testament both to the importance the issue has come to assume in the evangelical world-including among leaders who have battled Democrats on social issues like abortion and gay marriage-and to the White House’s eagerness to enlist evangelicals to help to counter conservative opposition to the idea of a path to... Read more

Psalm 21 celebrates in vv. 8-12 the future delivering acts of YHWH. It is not entirely clear at times whether the speaker is speaking of the King or of YHWH, but the two are clearly interwoven, something that is both true of the Psalms and a potential source of concern in our world today. In effect, the task of YHWH/the King is to defeat the enemies in their opposition to the King. The psalmist celebrates victory: 8     Your hand... Read more

We had an interesting discussion Tuesday centered on scripture, the reliability of scripture, and the foundation of our faith: Houston, We’ve Had a Problem. One of the key aspects of this conversation was how we view scripture as reliable in the face of the scientific evidence for an old earth and for evolution. Certainly I think we can defend the reliability of scripture, the reliability of the scientific evidence, and the Christian gospel. We don’t have to disregard any of... Read more

We need to understand other religions for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is our globalized world is making the world smaller and because some think the differences between the religions is actually, upon closer inspection, shrinking as well.  Stephen Prothero agrees with me on the first and on the second claims. The differences must be seen for what they are and not (to coin a bad expression) “pretended into unity.” See Prothero: God Is Not One:... Read more
